Jan 21, 2019 Alankit

The Income Tax Department has made it compulsory for all taxpayers in India to have a Permanent Account Number, which is referred to as PAN. The number, a ten-digit alphanumeric code is printed on the PAN Card which serves an extremely important document and a unique identity proof for all individuals and entities, which come under the Income Tax Act of 1961. The PAN Card can be obtained by submitting an online pan application as well as through TIN Facilitation Centres (TIN-FCs) for PAN related services.

Having presence in over 673 cities and 6120 business locations, Alankit Limited brings services for getting a PAN card and processing of pan card change form in case the PAN holder requires some changes in his or her PAN details. The most common changes which people seek in their PAN details are corrections in name, change in contact address, updating date of birth, etc.

Importance of correcting name in PAN card

Firstly, let us understand the need for a PAN card. If an individual, company or firm wants to perform any kind of high-value financial transaction, they must have a valid PAN card. This is applicable not only for Indian citizens and entities but for all non-resident Indians (NRIs) residing outside India who have taxable income; or if they want to involve in share trading or invest in immovable properties and mutual funds. The Permanent Account Number (PAN) issued by the I-T Department remains the same throughout the lifespan of the PAN holder.

PAN holders should consider making essential changes or rectifications in their PAN details as an important task which can otherwise delay further documentation or bank related process carried out on the basis of PAN card.

On December 5th, 2018, new rules pertaining to PAN card, as mentioned below, were implemented by the I-T Department. According to the new rules, it is not mandatory for individuals whose mothers are single parents to mention their father’s name. The revised application forms will have the option asking whether individuals want to give their father’s name or mother’s name to be listed on their PAN cards

While new applicants of PAN are required to submit accurate name-related details, existing PAN holders must ensure they get the name-related errors rectified as early as possible. Corrections in the name in PAN details might arise as a result of:

• Spelling mistakes in the name of the applicant/father/mother, either at the time of printing the PAN Card or wrong information provided by the applicant

• Change of a person’s name after marriage or divorce.
